It's that time of year again. The time when pollen floats through the air and mold grows on houses and fences. Spring can be a pretty awful time of year for those who suffer from seasonal allergies. I've written a lot about boosting the immune system and how to use food as medicine, however, today I wanted to gather up all of my old posts and add a few new things specific to allergies.
If you suffer from seasonal allergies, it's often due to lowered immune function and sometimes low gut function. You will remember that most of your immune system exists in your gut. One of the best ways to improve your symptoms is by giving your immune system a boost.
Vitamin C, D, E, garlic, sleep, and low stress levels all contribute to overall health. When you provide your body with everything it needs naturally, it is able to function properly for you. For example, here are a couple posts I did about the importance of Vitamin D: Vitamin D and The Importance of Vitamin D. I also wrote a post all about napping and its benefits: Taking Power Naps is Beneficial. This post is one of my favorites as it deals with stress and its effects on your body: Finding Ways to Overcome Daily Stress.
Food is also incredibly important as lots of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and dairy products contain wonderful probiotics, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that your body needs. Here is a post I did about specific foods that boost your immune system: Foods That Boost Your Immune System. I also did a post on my Mom's Immune Support Soup and one all about healthy tea: A Cup of Tea Makes Everything Better.
I've written a section in A Dancer's Diary all about allergies and how to alleviate them naturally. Honey, especially Manuka honey, contains propolis which is a great source of immune-boosting antioxidants. A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in 8-ounces of water helps with lymph drainage. Avoid artificial colors and preservatives, GMO, MSG, and excess sugar as they all tax your immune system.
One of my favorite allergy homeopathics is Allergy by Heel BHI. It works fast to relieve allergy symptoms. You can find this homeopathic in health food stores or online. Avoid over-the-counter medications as they usually contain colors, flavors, and sugar/sweetener that can weaken your immune system even further.
I hope that this post helps you this Spring if you are struggling with allergies. If you'd like more information, you can read my book where there is a whole chapter dedicated to immune function.
Have a wonderful Spring my friends! Until next time,
